University of St Andrews - Bute Building, Geobiology Labs
Callidus Design Limited was appointed by the University of St Andrews to carry out the design of all services related to the conversion of existing spaces into new Geobiology Laboratories. The interdisciplinary laboratories will be dedicated to studying the links between geochemistry and biology over Earth history, as evidenced in modern environments and recorded in the rock record.
The laboratories will also support a host of undergraduate researchers starting dissertation projects and summer internships on a wide range of cross-disciplinary projects, including:
- geochemistry of Mars analogue soils from the Atacama desert (Chile)
- sulphur cycling in Earth’s oldest well-preserved microbial mats
- nutrient cycling in redox-stratified Lake Kinnert (Israel)
- paleoenvironmental characterisation of the world’s first phosphorite deposits
Callidus Design was responsible for the design of the following services provided to the Geobiology Laboratories:
- Fresh Air and Recirculation Ventilation to maintain environmental conditions and make-up for the air lost as a result of Process Extract (incorporating Room Pressure Control)
- Process Extract and Scrubber System
- Fume Cupboard Installations
- Domestic Water Services
- Drainage
- LTHW System serving the space heating
- Reverse Osmosis Water Supply
- Building Management System (BMS)
- Small Power
- Lighting
- Data
- Fire Alarm
- Security
