Devro Medical Limited - New Cleanroom Facility

Callidus Design was appointed by Neilstra to design the Mechanical & Electrical Services for a new Cleanroom facility operated by Devro Medical Limited at Nova Technology Park, Glasgow. The new facility included Grade B & C sterile production areas for the research and development of collagen related products. All areas were constructed for operation in accordance with EU GMP & MHRA guidelines.

The new cleanroom facility was to be incorporated within an existing office pavilion building which therefore presented many challenges in terms of service co-ordination due to the restricted service voids which were available and the lack of space allocation for plant. As part of the project, a detailed study was presented by Callidus Design into the pros and cons of using either centralised air handling plant or ceiling mounted fan filter units. The outcome of the study resulting in the client opting for centralised air handling plant in order to reduce maintenance operations & disruption within their cleanroom facility.

The choice of using centralised air handling plant with distribution ductwork, in conjunction with the client imposed restrictions on minimum ceiling height, resulted in the HVAC installation presenting the greatest challenge on the project and particular attention was therefore paid to this aspect. Close co-ordination of the ductwork at design stage & the production of detailed HVAC design drawings subsequently ensured that the installation contractor fully understood the proposals and the project progressed in a straight forward manner. Three new plant compounds were provided to house the two external air handling units and a new air cooled chiller. A new plantroom was also installed to the rear of the property to house the LTHW boiler and chilled water plant, the control panel and compressed air plant.
